What determines when a school closes and school events are cancelled or closed?

Rhinelander School District’s (SDR) policy on cancelling school events or delaying is determined by a series of options and opinions.

One staff member who helps decide is SDR Athletic Director Brian Paulson. The process of cancelling an event is started by using the hourly forecasts WJFW Newswatch 12  puts out for the day, whether it’s icy roads or visibility that causes the cancellation.

Throughout the day Paulson keeps a close eye on the forecast. If it changes from a watch for a warning for example.

“We keep an eye on the roads. If they are icy or the visibility is low we contact other athletic directors to see what their schools have,” said Paulson.

Then Paulson communicates with Superintendent Kelli Jacobi.

If weather could effect travel, then they cancel the event.  If there is a storm warning, coaches are alerted and set up a schedule for practicing in the gym or somewhere indoors for severe storms. When snow is an issue or if the roads are icy and travel conditions are hazardous they cancel school and all school events.

“We do the best we can to keep everyone safe,” Paulson added.

Along with Paulson, there are many more factors in determining if a sporting event is cancelled or delayed.
