On Tuesday, November 27, the Rhinelander City Counsel held a public hearing at City Hall concerning ATV’s and UTV’s using city streets. This decision has been up in the air for a while now and the city is divided on the issue.

Many good points were made for each side during the meeting, but one thing almost everyone could agree on, were safety concerns.

One gentleman brought sample LED lights to show the audience. If this issue were to pass, turn signals, headlights, and lights for backing up, might be required to be mounted on the ATV’s/UTV’s. Many comments were made regarding the lights and requesting them to be made mandatory for those who would drive their ATV’s/UTV’s in town.

Where they would be allowed was not thoroughly touched upon as this was only the first public hearing. Officials did mention that ATV’s and UTV’s would not be allowed in the parks due to the results of other towns who have passed this. Lincoln Street was also mentioned as being off-limits to ATV’s and UTV’s because of its traffic and difficulties with making left-hand turns.

A gentleman approached the stand for his 90 second comments on the subject and mentioned how the tires of these vehicles are meant for dirt and trails, not asphalt, and that it could ruin the tires and cost the drivers money in the long run. This was idea was questioned when another commentator mentioned how he drives his ATV on the roads all the time and has not seen any tire damage.

As with most new subjects, the discussion went back and forth between multiple concerns and statistics that the counsel and public had to offer. From the sound of the room and comments, this idea is leaning towards passing. There will be another hearing but the date has not yet been set.
